“One of the most astute acts of diplomacy in history” ?

Do our site’s wider geographical range of visitors agree with this extract from an unattributed article ‘from our man in America’ in the Birmingham Post, which does not appear on its website?

It opens:

“In what can only be described as one of the most astute acts of diplomacy in history, President Vladimir Putin appears – for now – to have saved the world from another bloody catastrophe . . .

“The Russian premier has managed to broker a deal to avoid certain military action in Syria.

The Financial Times Comment adds:

“At a stroke, the Russian president was transformed from humbled and perpetually grouchy diplomatic spoiler – framed by critics as a defender of Syrian tyrants – into peacemaker and grandmaster in the game of realpolitik. He capped off a few days of diplomatic success, with a timely and powerful commentary in the New York Times challenging Mr Obama’s case for intervention”.
