Britain, Russia and the US are organising a conference in 2012 on a Middle East WMD Free Zone on behalf of the international community. The Arab Spring of 2011, renewed tension between Egypt and Israel, and the renaissance of nuclear energy are some issues that crowd into an already overflowing range of issues on the proposed Zone. These will be addressed at the 6th SOAS-British Pugwash London Conference on Middle East Security and a WMD Free Zone.
Speaking at this year’s Conference will be Alistair Burt MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office, who we hope will be joined by government officials from the USA, Russia and Philippines. This year’s conference is also in partnership with the initiative for a citizens’ Helsinki process in the Middle East supported by amongst others the Palestine Israel Journal and the Frederick Ebert Stiftung.
The Conference, co-organised by SOAS’s Centre for International Studies & Diplomacy (CISD) and British Pugwash with the Conference on Security and Cooperation in the Middle East, will be held at SOAS on Monday, 24th October.
