Japan under pressure to lift ban on arms exports

Japan’s Democratic party-led government and in particular its junior coalition partner the Social Democratic party, is likely to oppose the defence ministry’s case for easing the nation’s ban on arms exports.

This would  enable leading contractors to become important partners for western defence suppliers.

In the Financial Times it is reported:

‘Yukio Hatoyama, the prime minister, stressed in January the importance of upholding the “three principles of arms exports”, saying they were part of Japan’s promise to the world to be a peaceful nation.’
